Among all the relationships human beings have formed throughout history, few reveal a harmony as deep, discreet, and enduring as the one that binds humans and dogs. This is not a circumstantial bond nor a fleeting affection, but a coexistence shaped by centuries of proximity, mutual trust, and silent loyalty—slowly built over time and reaffirmed daily through lived experience.

In a truly healthy and civilized society, the principle according to which all human life possesses identical value should be an unquestionable truth. The expression all lives matter arose as an appeal to unity, a reminder that justice loses its very meaning when it becomes selective. Yet, in the morally feverish atmosphere of our time, affirming that white lives matter has turned into an act of silent rebellion.

A dangerous form of moral dementia has begun to spread within certain sectors of American public life, one that no serious society can tolerate. Some politicians, intoxicated by the theatrics of populism, have begun suggesting that local law enforcement officers should arrest federal agents who are merely fulfilling their duty to uphold immigration law.

The Admiral of the Portuguese Navy, Henrique Gouveia e Melo, candidate for the Presidency of the Republic, recently stated that after ten years an immigrant becomes as Portuguese as we are, or else we possess a special gene. Such a statement, clothed in apparent simplicity, betrays a troubling ignorance of the moral, historical, and spiritual essence that defines Portuguese identity.
